Before Adopting a Pet

Before you go looking for a puppy, take a good, long look at yourself.

Lots of people get so caught up in how much fun a new dog would be, they forget how much time and money having a dog is going to take.

And that's why millions of dogs are turned in to shelters every year. And why millions more are left to die by a roadside or chained outside to a doghouse to be miserable for a lifetime.

So, the next time you have a hankering to get a dog, make sure your life-style is suited to take on the many responsibilities involved. Take a "time-out" to ask yourself some important questions:

Will someone be home to provide meals on a regular basis?

Are you willing to exercise your new pet twice a day?

Are you willing to pay for all the inoculations, periodic veterinary examinations, and any emergency treatment that your dog may need?

Are you willing to license your dog and use a leash when off your property?

Are you ready to give your dog daily companionship, instead of companionship only when it's most convenient?

Do you understand the importance of spaying your female dog or neutering your male dog?

Sterilization is imperative for many reasons. Our country is already so overpopulated with animals that millions have to be euthanized every year for lack of responsible homes. Also, sterilizing your dogs gives them healthier, happier lives and it reduces behavioral problems.

Dogs require time, money, and care and commitment for a lifetime. If that doesn't fit in with your life-style, you'd better take another look at the situation.
